Aug 18: India is seeking to transform Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into modern, industry-linked centres through the PM-SETU initiative, with the aim of giving young people better skills and stronger employment opportunities.
The programme focuses on upgrading training facilities, improving courses and building closer partnerships between ITIs and industry. States have been encouraged to align ITI clusters with industrial corridors, MSME hubs, emerging technologies and new investment centres.
Under the hub-and-spoke model, smaller ITIs will be able to access advanced laboratories, experienced trainers, career services and employer networks through larger Hub ITIs. This could help students in smaller towns gain better access to industry-relevant training.
The government is also placing greater emphasis on emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. More than 2.10 lakh learners had enrolled in the SOAR programme as of July 16, reflecting efforts to prepare young people for technology-driven workplaces.
The initiative is expected to benefit not only job seekers but also industries looking for skilled workers and young people interested in entrepreneurship.
The real success of PM-SETU, however, will depend on whether upgraded ITIs translate into better training, stronger placements, higher incomes and meaningful career opportunities.
If effectively implemented, the programme could help bridge the gap between vocational education and industry demand while giving India’s young workforce a stronger foundation for the future.
