AINU Doctors Remove Massive Pumpkin-Sized Kidney Tumor from 53 Year Old Person

Hyderabad, May 25: Doctors at the Asian Institute of Nephrology & Urology (AINU Hospitals), Banjara Hills have successfully removed a very large kidney tumor Measuring 20 cm with a pumpkin size to save the life of a middle-aged man. A team led by Dr. Purnachandra Reddy Urologist, Uro-Oncologist & Executive Director and Dr Rajesh Kumar Reddy, Uro-Oncologist, Centre for Uro-Oncology – AINU, successfully performed this challenging procedure.

53yearold man, hailed from Kurnool, was referred to AINU with abdominal swelling, weakness, loss of appetite. On examination, doctors found a large abdominal mass lesion. Imaging revealed that tumor was arising from right kidney. The mass was so large that it occupied entire right half of the abdominal cavity, and it even displaced intestines into the opposite direction.

At the time of presentation, Patient was not in stable condition to undergo major surgery and prolonged anesthesia. Hence, he was stabilized by IV fluids and antibiotics. As hemoglobin was low, blood was transfused. After optimization, patient was taken up for planned surgical procedure, i.e Open Radical Nephrectomy under general anesthesia. Right Flank incision was made. Intraoperatively it was found a massive bleeding tumor replacing entire kidney, displacing intestines, pancreas and liver. Careful dissection was done without injuring surrounding structures. With great efforts kidney blood vessels identified and divided, then bleeding kidney was removed. Size of the entire specimen was measuring a massive 20 cm pumpkin like tumor. Post-surgery, patient recovered well without major issues. Microscopic examination confirmed that the tumor was a cancerous growth (Renal Cell Carcinoma). Microscopic surgical margins were clear implying complete removal of the tumor.

Speaking about the procedure Dr. Purna Chandra Reddy, Executive Director & Chief Consultant Urologist, Uro-Oncologist, AINU Banjara Hills said, “Managing such a massive kidney tumor required meticulous planning and advanced surgical precision. Our team successfully removed the tumor while preserving vital surrounding structures, ensuring the best possible outcome for the patient. This case underscores how early detection and timely intervention can significantly improve survival and recovery. Many individuals undergo routine health check-ups that include comprehensive biochemical investigations; however, ultrasound is often overlooked. This simple yet crucial imaging modality plays a vital role in detecting tumors at an early stage, enabling timely intervention and better outcomes.”.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala, Consultant Uro-Oncologist AINU Banjara Hills said, “This was an exceptionally complex case given the sheer size and location of the tumor. Our multidisciplinary team at AINU carefully planned and executed the surgery with precision, ensuring complete removal while preserving vital structures. This success underscores the advancements in surgical expertise and technology, enabling us to handle even the most challenging uro-oncology cases with confidence and improved patient outcomes”.

Meanwhile, Surgical team at AINU had a word of caution for everyone. According to doctors urological cancers are rising all over the world. This needs to be taken seriously. AINU Hospital is well equipped with Surgical Robot and laparoscopy which facilitate surgery through key-holes. Unlike present case scenario, if patient gets diagnosed in early stage, partial nephrectomy (Removal of tumor without sacrificing healthy part of the kidney) can be performed by key-hole surgery by surgical robot.
