New Delhi, Mar 16: The Andrzej Wajda Centenary Retrospective, celebrating the Year of Wajda, opened to a packed and deeply engaged audience in Delhi with a special screening of Ashes and Diamonds by legendary, Lifetime Achievement Oscar-winning Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda. The screening took place as part of the 2026 Habitat International Film Festival, drawing cinephiles and admirers of world cinema for a memorable opening evening.

The programme began with a welcome note by Małgorzata Wejsis-Gołębiak, Director of the Polish Institute New Delhi, who spoke about the global significance of Wajda’s cinema and the importance of revisiting his work in the centenary year of his birth.

Officially inaugurating the retrospective, Poland’s Head of Mission H.E. Dr. Piotr Świtalski reflected on Wajda’s extraordinary artistic legacy and highlighted the timeless power of Ashes and Diamonds. He noted that the film’s exploration of history, identity, and moral choices continues to resonate strongly with audiences around the world, including in India, given the complex historical journeys experienced by both Poland and India.

The Andrzej Wajda retrospective continues with a daily screening at 2 PM at The Theatre, India Habitat Centre as part of the Habitat International Film Festival until 20 March, offering Delhi audiences a rare opportunity to experience more of the master’s landmark works on the big screen:
