Bharath Ramamrutham’s Profile

Bharath Ramamrutham is one of India’s leading Architectural, Landscape, Travel and Hospitality photographers. Having a background in architecture and design and an abiding interest in the arts and crafts of India, his photography of design in the built and natural and human environment covers landscapes, architecture and interiors, people, places and heritage. His photographs have been published in more than 20 illustrated books and major design journals across the world. He lives in Goa and runs a visual communications and publishing company, Graf Media.

Throughout his long and prolific career, Bharath Ramamrutham has created a body of work which has come to exemplify not only the purist approach to the medium, but to many people the definitive pictorial statement on Indian architecture, design and the Indian landscape. The prestige and popularity of his work has been enhanced by the extraordinary technical perfection of his photography, his emphasis on light and space and his insistence on absolute control of the photographic processes.

A stream of books, monographs and contributions to publications around the world during the past 30 years of his creative life have established Bharath in his rightful place in the photographic pantheon. Bharath’s architect’s eye and discipline has moved him to capture the structure and spirit, body and soul of the icons of traditional and modern architecture in India. His unique capacity to capture not only the architecture, but also the times and culture embodied in each piece of work make his photographs distinctive.

The vision of establishing Graf began when Bharath Ramamrutham collaborated with a variety of authors and publishers on a wide variety of books which were his passion. With his meticulous attention to detail, refined aesthetic sensibilities and progressive design concepts, he was requested to provide end-to-end solutions for a range of impressed clients. His photographs have been the outstanding feature in more than 20 seminal books including Indian Design, Inside India, Temple Towns of Tamil Nadu, Chidamabaram, Brihadeesvara Temple Tanjavur, Elephanta, Marwar Paintings, Jewels of the Nizam’s and Bombay Gothic to name just a small selection.

‘Falaknuma’ (on Falaknuma Palace Hyderabad) was the first from Graf’s Publishing division, followed by ‘Rambagh’ (Rambagh Palace Jaipur) and the ‘Mansions of Chettinad’ and ‘Hampi – of Gods and Kings’. Planned for the near future are books on Design and style in Goa, Kerala and Pondicherry amongst others. His landscape images form part of the very first Incredible India campaign of the Dept. of Tourism, Government of India and marketing campaigns of the Tourism Authority of Seychelles and Mauritius.

In the last thirty five years that he has been working professionally, he has travelled and photographed extensively in India and South Asia.
