New Delhi, 28th May 2025: In a compelling demonstration of student-led innovation and environmental leadership, Shlesha Pandey, the Head Girl of Jayshree Periwal Global School, Jaipur, has spearheaded two breakthrough sustainability projects OOMI (One Outdoor, multiple indoors) and Klein B that have gained national recognition for addressing two of today’s most pressing environmental challenges: urban heat and water pollution.

Both projects were conceptualized and led by a team of students under Shlesha Pandey’s leadership, combining engineering, environmental science, and design thinking to deliver real-world solutions that are scalable and sustainable.

OOMI introduces an innovative response to urban warming caused by conventional air conditioning systems. It features a centralized underground outdoor unit that powers a closed-loop cooling system, reducing electricity consumption by up to 75% while limiting heat discharge. The project earned national recognition after qualifying for the prestigious TIE Global Innovation Challenge and securing a grant of ₹85,000 for prototype development. It has also sparked interest from early-stage investors impressed by its potential for large-scale implementation.

Meanwhile, Klein B addresses the often overlooked crisis of agricultural runoff and water pollution. The project deploys a nature-based purification strategy that combines algae-removal boats converting biomass into bioplastics, azolla ferns for nutrient absorption, and Daphnia water fleas to naturally consume microalgae. This layered, eco-friendly solution has earned multiple awards at business plan competitions and is celebrated for its potential to combat eutrophication in a sustainable way.

“Leading these projects has been more than an academic exercise it’s been a mission to create meaningful change,” said Shlesha. “From engineering prototypes to pitching to investors, these experiences have taught me what it truly means to be a leader, collaborator, and environmental advocate.”

The success of OOMI and Klein B was driven by a collaborative spirit, mentorship support, and a team-wide commitment to environmental change. These experiences have not only elevated Shlesha’s passion for sustainability but also equipped her with practical skills in research, innovation, public speaking, and team leadership.

“These projects are just the beginning,” she adds. “If leadership means using your voice, your vision, and your actions to build a better world, then I’m proud to say I’ve found mine.”
